A crowd of about 70-80 came to “Drawing Gym 2″, the pop-up art gallery by artist Michael Namkung at 5800 Third’s new Phase 2 building last week. What a show! Gallery hours continue the next two Saturdays, May 12 and 19, from noon to 5pm, if you missed the opening. The engaging concept created engaging drawings: People doing gym workouts used pens, hands, feet, basketballs and more to create fascinating images, from large swirls of bursting energy, to grass-like drawings of color and symmetry.

'Drawing Gym 2' with artist Michael Namkung, center.

Namkung has been pursuing this genre for some time, including his first effort, Drawing Gym, which was also well received. He’s been featured at numerous galleries as well as the S.F. Museum of Modern Art.

Finding a great home is an art, too, and it’s risen to a fine art at 5800 Third. With phase 1 virtually sold out, phase 2 has just opened to offer many floorplans in 1-, 2- and 3-bedroom homes. Buyers remark at how spacious our homes are, and with prices starting in the $300,000′s, you get more for your money than any comparable condiminiums in San Francisco. Come see for yourself, call the sales office to arrange a tour, 415-822-3800.

After a wine reception and home-tours at 5800, guests were feted at Smokin Warehouse BBQ, then Radio Africa & Kitchen before a fabulous repast at Limon….and dessert-items from Fresh & Easy. (And check out the 3rd St. cafe-explosion mapped-out by KQED radio, capped by Limon/5800.)

Dishcrawl feedback was fab: “I had no idea there were all these great restaurants here.” “We’ve gotta come back.” “This is great food…what a find.”

And with rental rates sky-high in San Francisco, the advantage for buyers is a no-brainer at 5800 Third, www.5800third.com.

Sponsored jointly by the 94124 Arts Program, The Bayview Hunters Point Y, and 5800 Third Street, the show is a collection of drawings and video installations by Michael Namkung. This exhibition showcases artwork that answers the question: What happens when your drawing instructor is also your personal trainer?

In 2010, Namkung created his first ‘Drawing Gym’ by having athletes push their bodies through various exercise stations and creating drawings. After becoming a certified personal trainer in 2011, he worked with the Bayview Hunters Point Y to create ‘Drawing Gym 2’, in which 11 participants reconnect with the creative potential of their physical bodies by using the activity of drawing to record their physical changes over time. His website is www.michaelnamkung.com.

5800 Third is hosting the art installation in two of its new condominium homes in the just-opening phase-2 building of 66 homes, centered around a beautiful greenscaped courtyard.

Home buyers have made 5800 Third one of the city’s fastest-selling new home communities, and with its spacious 1-, 2- and 3-bedroom floorplans starting in the $300,000’s, it’s no wonder people are saying, “Why rent, when you can own at 5800?” Join us for the ‘Drawing Gym’ exhibition, and see for yourself why living at 5800 Third is Smart Living – and artistic living — at its best, www.5800third.com.

Yes, dogs are the new kids, especially in San Francisco, where it has been widely reported that dogs outnumber children. And for home owner Amy Baxter Jones and her beloved pet Sammy, there is no better place to live than 5800 Third Street, with its dog-wash station, nearby parks, and community of dog lovers.

Amy reports that Sammy has so many new friends since moving to 5800. “Every time we go out to the dog park or on walks, there are other neighbors out with their dogs,” says Amy. “We have only been at 5800 since February 1st, but we have already developed friendships with most of the dog owners in the community and started planning social get-togethers with our new friends!”

Sammy also loves his jaunts to nearby John MacLaren Park, an extensive natural oasis with miles of trails and multiple recreational amenities including picnic areas, playgrounds, an indoor swimming pool, and of course, dog play areas! Sammy is a bit too small for the dog washing station, but since he resides in one of the 2-bedroom, 2-bath homes, he has his own bathtub at home.

Whether you parent a dog, a cat, or just enjoy living in a community with easy access to nature, culture, and great restaurants, 5800 Third boasts the ultimate in convenience living. Amy reports that Sammy “feels lucky to be a part of such a dog friendly community. Woof!”

Drive around the Bay Area and you’ll see architectural signage, digital graphics, and even biodegradable signs for businesses as diverse as Yank Sing, Academy of Art College, North Beach Pool, and BART – all produced by our neighbor Priority Architectural Graphics.

Priority is just one of the many members that comprise the Bayview Merchants’ Association, a non-profit group of neighborhood businesses which has promoted its members’ business interests through advocacy and marketing campaigns since 1925!

According to the association, you can… “Stroll down the Third Street commercial corridor and encounter family-owned coffee shops, swinging jazz and blues clubs, beautiful murals painted by local artists, decorative gardens tended by community residents, and delicious dining options – all while basking in the warmest and sunniest weather in the city…The Bayview is rapidly catching on as the hidden gem of San Francisco.” We couldn’t agree more! For more information about this organization, which coordinate meetings, projects and special events that bring together and mutually benefit its members, click here or call BMA at (415) 657-3728. And if you need a sign, Priority is at 1596 Hudson, off Third, http://www.prioritygraphics.com/

The other signs, since we’re on the subject, are the signs of transformation in the Bayview, led by 5800 Third. Buying a home here is a smart choice, because you get more home for the money than other new homes on the market, and we’re right on the Third Street light rail from downtown San Francisco and the SOMA and Mission Bay neighborhoods.

Come by for a tour! www.5800third.com, 415-822-3800.

Traci Peace, a long time Bayview resident and founder of Visions of La Moda has created a unique organization that helps to beautify the Bayview and turn dreams of designing high fashion into a reality. This non profit organization has been offering free instruction and guidance for urban youths ages 12 – 18 since 2007, offering rigorous classes that include sewing, illustration, merchandising, marketing as well as classes in French and Italian! Many students land scholarships and internships at prestigious design schools and fashions firms.

The school also arranges for students to design local shop windows so they can expand on their visual merchandising skills. Open enrollment is coming up soon, so if you know a budding designer who has dreams of winning “Project Runway,” tell them about this outstanding local resource. Or if you have a local business, contact Ms. Peace to discuss getting your windows spruced up for the Spring! Classes are held in the lower level multi-purpose room at Faith Temple Church, 1758 Oakdale Ave. http://visionsoflamoda.org/

Check out stylish students Arielle (on left) and Chante modeling garments they designed and produced themselves for a fashion show at San Francisco State University. Arielle wore her outfit to her prom, AND Visions of La Moda’s Chief Merchandising Instructor Alika Mailly placed her in an internship program at Nordstrom, which led to a staff position. Not bad for a young lady who had never sewn anything prior to starting the program in 2010!

The San Francisco Examiner described Visions of La Moda as…”a remarkable example of socially-responsible businesses working with the community for the benefit of all. It also illustrates the emerging recognition that social cohesion and commerce, not usually found in the same sentence, are intertwined and critical to one another. ..overall community health emerges from strong and highly-localized social and built systems.”

At 5800 Third Street, we are so enthused about our talented neighbors and all the other businesses we highlight each week. Know someone we should feature?

We concur, even if this place wasn’t just down the street from us, it’s destination-worthy! At El Azteca Taqueria, every dish is created using only the freshest ingredients. They serve the choicest meats and seafood, freshest rice and beans. They also offer many vegetarian options, too. Arriba!

Our neighbor, Harrington Winery, located at 1559 Custer Avenue (between Quint and Rankin) produces excellent Pinot Noirs.

According to Mr. Harrington, these wines are produced in an artisanal manner in which all production decisions, the majority of labor performed and the ownership of the means of production are under the control of one person. Production limits are an important factor in the quality equation. Therefore, the winery will never attempt to produce more wine than would compromise the goal of creating, singlehandedly, a superior quality Pinot Noir. Harrington Wines can be enjoyed at some of California’s leading restaurants including Town Hall and Campton Place in San Francisco, Tra Vigne in St. Helena, and The Regent Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills. Or you can join the mailing list here: http://harringtonwine.com/contact.html to receive an announcement about their next open house. Cheers!

With homes starting in the $300,000s and 3.5% FHA Financing available, these spacious and comfortable homes featuring ample natural light, beautiful hardwood flooring, high-quality fixtures and appliances by Grohe, General Electric and Kohler are going fast!

If you’re questioning whether now is a good time to buy, take into consideration what you are paying for rent, what a new home costs, and today’s interest rates. In San Francisco, when you compare average rents with the low cost of ownership at 5800 Third Street, the answer is an unqualified YES! And with mortgage rates at an all-time low, according to CNN Money, you will actually SAVE a substantial amount each month when you purchase one of our spacious homes with private balconies, energy star appliances, in-building parking and much, much more.

Here’s an example: A renter paying $2,500/month for a two bedroom apartment could pay just $1,732 a month – or less – for a mortgage and full home-ownership! That example assumes a sales price of $375,000 with a 20% down payment and reflects after-tax savings of approximately $407. It also includes HOA dues, property taxes, and principal and interest on a 30-year fixed rate loan amortized over 30 years at 4.125%. But if you act fast, you can get an even lower interest rate now! PLUS we can work with you on a lower down payment, which will still put you (way) ahead, both now and in the future! With tax season upon us, call us to find out how much you can save by purchasing a beautiful new home. So hurry, payments may change with interest rate, credit score, purchase price and other variables, and terms can change quickly. Call us today, at 415-822-3800.
